The meaning of it all

I am intrigued that the latest surveys quoted in The Week state that 70% of the nation describe themselves as Christians.  Really?   I don't see them queuing outside the churches. 

I suppose what they mean is that they have some sort of belief.  What befuddles me is that very few of those 70% want to bother doing anything about it, in terms of thinking it all through.  If you believe that the world was made rather than being the bi-product of some unintended chemical accident, then surely you want to investigate something about the maker?

Instead, most people seem to want to hide the truth behind as much superficiality as possible.  Just open the Metro each morning and it is filled with stories about slebs and cats being rescued rather than anything of more substance.  Because our society is driven by consumerism, we are scared of making anything too difficult for people - and therefore preventing or discouraging a purchase.  So we have to keep everything light and frothy.  Anyone writing about the meaning behind the creation of the world - or our existence - has no chance of getting through to the masses when you've got Simon Cowells or Richard Bransons around making superficiality an art form.

It really frustrates me that we have decent clever generous people around but that our society as a whole is so flaky and superficial.
